Supplements and Superfoods
This is an introductory article about Superfoods and supplements, since I am imagining my readers being new to the raw foods diet, or just reading this because they know me personally. I am going to assume that the person reading this is not a raw foodist.
Follow up:
I am looking back to before I was vegan, before I even thought about what I ate. I assumed, like most people that I know, that the human body could handle and digest anything. Since then, I have studied quite a bit about nutrition and human anatomy, and, having experimented with my own body and diet, have come to some conclusions that I will share.
First of all, I can’t imagine what my life would be like if I hadn’t changed my diet and lifestyle. I believe I would be dead now. I remember experiencing plenty of symptoms that I just basically brushed off and ignored: heart pangs, shortness of breath, muscle twitches, bronchial inflammation, urinary pain. There were probably others, but since I was so out of touch with my body, I didn’t take much notice of them. And then after all the cleansing and seeing all the crazy things that came out of my body (stones, black sewage, mucous plaque, polyps, unidentifiable stuff, and lots and lots of worms!), I am certain that I was on a fast track to a common chronic condition or an early grave.
Like most people, I thought that taking a multi-vitamin, or a vitamin C pill, would fill in the nutritional gaps in my diet, and provide a magic bullet to ward off disease. So, like so many others, I would occasionally purchase cheap supplements at the drugstore, and dutifully pop the pills when I remembered to do so. I remember having really yellow urine, and not feeling any better than before. Now I know why.
So here’s what I’d like to share. There’s so much actually, but I’ll keep it simple. There are basically 2 types of supplements. Good and bad. Or those that work and those that don’t. The ones that don’t work are synthetic, often made from petroleum byproducts. Yes, petroleum byproducts. They are a product of the chemical age that interprets the human biology in the most simplistic terms. Fortunately, a healthy body recognizes these as toxins and is unable to utilize them. If you have a healthy liver, it will expel the toxins. If your liver is compromised, the toxins could possibly be stored with fat cells and slowly wreak some havoc on your system. Either way, there is little nutritional benefit, if any, to popping synthetic supplements. How do you know if the supplement in question is derived from a synthetic source? A good rule of thumb is, does it sound like something that occurs in nature? If the answer is no, then it is synthetic. “Acid” is a good code word.
So what are the “good” supplements, you know, supplements that can actually be utilized by the human biochemistry? They are derived from FOOD sources. You can get plenty of vitamins and minerals from eating a raw foods diet. However, I believe even on that diet, there are several benefits to using high-quality, food-based supplements. I will write about that later. For now, I am addressing those who are not on a raw foods diet. In which case, it is EXTREMELY important to supplement your cooked food diet with high-quality food-based supplements, as cooking foods destroys much of the nutritional content, as I have explained earlier.
So these high-quality food-based supplements are going to be derived from food that is, minimally organically certified, but hopefully purer. They are nutrient dense, and easily absorbed into the bloodstream and digested. You will probably feel less hunger, and less desire to eat as much. So you will probably lose weight. And your body will start to crave these high-quality nutrient-dense foods at the expense of lower quality, nutrient-sparse dead foods.
What I am talking about is a new class of foods called “SUPERFOODS”. These foods contain high amounts of nutrients (nutrient-dense) and no filler. By eating superfoods consistently, your body is nourished on fewer calories, and things start to happen on a cellular level. Basically, your whole DNA reboots.
